Description

Multi-layer stencil on a miniature flag, painted with Krylon spray paint. Each layer of paint needed 3 or 4 coats, because the fabric just soaked the paint right up.

The image is from a photograph taken in the Iraq war.

This stencil is a few years old...looking back at it now, in hindsight, the overall effect I get here is: this image makes me queasy. It is a visual indictment...A defacement of a beloved image. My feelings about the Iraq war have evolved somewhat; I still firmly believe that the invasion of Iraq was a mistake, and a terrible tragedy. Yet I also understand that many Iraqis are grateful to be free from Saddam's rule- so opinions are mixed among Iraqis as to whether the invasion was justified. I bear no resentment towards the members of the US military who served in Iraq, and understand that the soldiers have no choice where the US military directs it's agression...Members of our military have a strong sense of duty to protect their country, and cannot be faulted for their loyalty. My opposition to the war is for humanitarian reasons- the US invasion of Iraq caused the deaths 100,000 innocent people, and forced millions to flee their homes. My hope is that the US can show more restraint in the future, and that the justifications for 'pre-emptive defense' will be given more scrutiny.
